OrthodoxInfo.com is a website with invaluable informational resources for Orthodox Christians. This site has been around since 1996, and I like its simple, old-school design. It is not uncommon for resources from this site to be shared with newcomers of the Orthodox Church.
Nevertheless, the original site has problems: the first thing that greets you is a warning that the SSL is invalid (annoying). Next, if you go to the homepage (and a couple other pages), it is littered with anti-Russian propaganda, which could easily scandalize someone seeking to join the Orthodox Church. On top of these issues, there are Google Analytics and other Google widgets embedded in the site’s HTML code. Allowing these issues to persist is a terrible way to treat the treasure contained on this site.
To resolve this predicament, I downloaded the front end of the site, as well as the old homepage from the Wayback Machine. I scrubbed the Wayback Machine and Google Analytics code (as well as the propaganda) from the site and fixed a couple of broken/dead links that I spotted. I also added the following blurb at the top of home:
Welcome to the official fork of orthodoxinfo.com! The information from the original webite is very valuable; however, the original has some bugs (invalid SSL, broken search bar, Google Analytics, Russophobia). The goal of this fork is to preserve the invaluable information from this website unchanged while removing the aforementioned issues. Please visit the Contact page for any matters concerning this fork.
One thing I have recently done is swap out the search bar: previously, it was a Google widget, and I wanted it to instead work the same way that based.cooking’s search bar works (which is way more elegant, being a mere half-a-dozen lines of JavaScript). Furthermore, the old search bar gives results to the old http site and not to my fork (I was not sure how to change that, and I don’t like Google).
I have opened a Codeberg page for visitors of the site to report bugs and suggest/commit improvements to the site. I have done my part to get the site working properly again; please contribute to this project by finding issues that need to be fixed (e.g. broken links). You can also message me on SimpleX concerning improvements for the site.
I intend to increase the font size and make the mobile version more legible. If you are proficient in renovating dated CSS files, please reach out!
