Originally Composed in 2024
I composed this score in the summer of 2024. The piece is inspired by both Lvosky’s Cherubic Hymn (YouTube) & Smolensky’s arrangement of the “Streletskaya” Cherubic Hymn (Soundcloud). I began by first composing mm11-12 (the tenor feature followed by the bass feature). One oddity of this piece is the similar motion between the alto & tenor instead of one of these two moving with the soprano for most of the piece (at the beginning, the sopranos and bass move together instead). Page 3 has variations of the first two pages (including a change of harmony (but not the melody in the 5th measure of the musical sequence), and the bass part gets more fun after the entrance (before the Alleluia).
The Slavonic version features the tenor on the third page, where the other three voices say “отложимъ” while the tenor responds with “попеченiе”. I first typeset this piece in English, so this feature in the Slavonic version was a clever way to deal with the disparity of syllables in the phrase.
This composition has been approved for Liturgical use by a board member of the ROC’s Synodal Liturgical Music Commission.
